Postcards - photography and design
kawaistreet x chinatown remixed
At times, photographing these busted public art installations was probably a coping mechanism for the frustration I felt seeing them destroyed.
Public art professionals know these kinds of installments need to be virtually indestructible to survive on the street for any length of time. By contrast, these were fibreglass moulds—a little bendy and temptingly breakable. Something about their unflinching smiles gives the scenes a darkly humourous flavour.
The BIA’s tenacity in keeping these increasingly broken sculptures on display for so long, to me, was always as questionable as it was admirable. I found comfort and amusement in the absurdity of memorializing these installations in a set of tourist postcards.
